Al Muthanna sometimes simply, Muthanna, (Arabic: المثنى‎) is one of the governorates of Iraq. It is in the south of the country, bordering Saudi Arabia. Its capital is Samawah. Prior to 1976 it was part of the Diwaniya Province, which also included present day Najaf Governorate and Al-Qādisiyyah Governorate.

It also includes the ancient Sumerian ruin of Uruk, which is possibly the source of the name Iraq.

In July 13, 2006 British, Australian, and Japanese forces handed over security responsibility for Muthanna province to Iraqi forces in the first such transfer of an entire province.[1]

From 2006-2008, US forces continued to maintain a very minimalist presence in the Province with a single desert outpost along the major highway in the extreme northern edge of the Province. In late 2008, British forces formally handed over responsibility for training of Iraqi forces in the Province to US forces from the 4th Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division. Following this handover, elements from the 2nd Battalion of the 12th Cavalry Regiment closed the isolated desert outpost and built a new outpost inside the Brigade Headquarters of the 39th Iraqi Army Brigade near the capital city of Samawah. From this location, they provide both civilian and military advisors to train the Iraqi Police, Army, and the Provincial Government.
